Short summary
Using 20 years of satellite observations, this study examines the drivers of marine net primary productivity (NPP) in the Gulf of California. Nitrate availability and water-column stratification were the main predictors of NPP. Our results show that anomalously warm conditions favour the expansion of oligotrophic areas, suggesting that continued warming and enhanced stratification may increase the extent of the low-productivity zone, with important ecological consequences.
