The Carnian Pluvial Episode was a major climate event marked by a shift from arid to wetter conditions and major changes in biota. In this study, we analyze a sedimentary core from the Larne Basin, Northern Ireland, along with new data from South China. The results support volcanism as a key trigger of the event and indicate prolonged carbon cycle disruption, followed by increased delivery of coarse sediment, reflecting enhanced weathering and runoff.

We studied internal tides in the Gulf of Oman, where they had not been observed in detail before. Using seabed instruments, we found that these underwater waves travel far inshore, strengthen as the season shifts toward fall, and stay predictable for weeks. They may bring cooler, low-oxygen water to coastal areas, influencing marine ecosystems and reef health.

We present initial results from a 650 m long core of Late Triasssic to Early Jurassic (190–202 Myr) sedimentary strata from the Cheshire Basin, UK, which is shown to be an exceptional record of Earth evolution for the time of break-up of the supercontinent Pangaea. Further work will determine periodic changes in depositional environments caused by solar system dynamics and used to reconstruct orbital history.

Short summary
The Persian/Arabian Gulf exports a dense, salty, oxygen-rich current that helps ventilate the Arabian Sea. Measurements along the northern margin of the Gulf of Oman show that the flow remains thin and attached over smooth seafloor, but thickens, mixes, and detaches after a bathymetric step over rough terrain of the shelf. These changes affect oxygen delivery and benthic life, and also suggest that climate-driven density shifts may alter their pathways and impacts.
